5 Things New Moms Should Do
Being a parent is a big responsibility. You have to take decisions for yourself and for your newborn baby, which means that his development and health is in your hands. For this reason, new moms are usually insecure when it comes to taking decisions and don’t know exactly what to do or how to behave on certain situations. They are overwhelmed by the information and usually, Google is their solution.
The world wide web contains plenty of advice on what you should do and should not do as a new mom. Most of them are low-quality articles but there are a few gems out there.
For this reason, I decided to create a list and show you a few helpful suggestions for you as a new moms to do.
Down below I will list 5 things I think every new mom should do. These tips and suggestions apply to new moms past the first few weeks.
1. Don’t Feel Guilty
New parents create a bad habit of never resting. They are all the time doing something even when their little baby is resting. Developing this habit, they start to feel kind of guilty when their little one is napping and they are lying in bed playing games on their mobile phone, doing nothing. Don’t feel like you should be cleaning or doing house works instead. Don’t feel like a bad mom because you left your kid watch a little bit more TV than he/she should.
These are only a few examples which can make a new mom feel guilty. But, don’t feel this way. We all do these things but the new moms have a guilty feeling almost for everything relating to their baby. After some time has passed, you will get used to your baby and daily activities will have their time during the day.
2. Try to Do Something Creative Every Day
Pregnancy and giving birth to a baby for the first time can be very stressful. You don’t know what to expect and what to do when certain things happen. Take care of yourself and release the stress by doing different relaxing activities.
You should definitely try to do something creative every day. Doing something creative or just being creative in general will help you release the stress and feel much better. You don’t have to be an artist and it doesn’t have to be something perfect. Just create something which will make you feel good.
You can try to make a healthy meal that you are proud of during a nap or figure out how to sew or something similar. You can try to customize a T-Shirt by writing something on it or by drawing something you like, a portrait or a cute emoji. There are tons of do-it-yourself tutorials online for different creative activities. Just find something you like to do.
The point here is to make something that makes you feel productive, cool and like yourself again.
3. Ask for Help
Everyone gets tired. Especially if you are a new mom, everything is all over the place. You don’t know what to do first. If you need a break, then it is okay to ask for help. Ask a friend or a relative to come for a few days and spend some time with you. They will help you with some chores or over activities you might need some help for. Leave your newborn with someone you trust and go out to see a movie or doing something you like.
If you don’t feel like going out tonight, you can tell your partner to watch the kid for a few hours so you can rest a bit. Everyone deserves a break, so do you.
4. Don’t try on your pre-pregnancy pants
As you already might know, you have gained weight. I mean, lot of weight. A research has found that an average woman can gain from 25 up to 35 pounds after becoming pregnant. The gain varies from your standard body weight but still no matter if you are underweight or overweight, you will still gain at least 15 pounds. While pregnancy is a widely known weight gaining factor, still some people get stressed a lot when they see the chubby version of themselves in the mirror. While you will lose some weight after you give birth to your baby, still you will be a bit overweight and if you want to avoid some extra stress, you should not try on your pre-pregnancy pants and should not go pants shopping, at least for now. You will be surprised by the size increase you will have. The expression “muffintop” will take on a new meaning and should be changed to “enormous bakery scone on two toothpicks”.
5. Don’t Google Everything and Don’t Doubt Yourself
If you are a new mom, then it can be a little difficult to take decisions. You don’t feel completely secure and in most of cases, you doubt yourself. It can take a few weeks or months for the parent instincts to kick in, so have patience. Try your hardest to trust your gut. Even if you feel a bit insecure, you know how to take care of your kid. Eventually, you will begin to notice the difference between a hungry cry or “I need a new diaper” cry. It is normal for babies to cry, not sleep and be weird looking. Try to not Google everything because the internet always will tell you that your are doing it wrong. By searching online even for the smallest issue, you will start to lose confidence and will start to doubt yourself even more.
These are 5 things new moms should do. I know that there are definitely a lot of other things to list here but based on my opinion, these are the most important ones that help you improve yourself and grow your kid easier.
